Nam Cheong Community Centre | Guide to Life
Description
"Can you not mention my name?" "Can I use a pseudonym?" "I don't want to mention my profession—people around me might easily find out." "My family doesn't want me to be photographed." "Can you only mention that I have depression, and not other mental illnesses?"... We believe everyone can understand the voices of these individuals in mental health recovery. But upon deeper reflection, the general public still holds many misconceptions about mental health, which leads to self-stigmatization among those in recovery.
For the past five years, Lai Man Wai has actively promoted the "Human Library" project. In recent years, we have attempted to break away from traditional formats by incorporating community-guided tours led by individuals in recovery, allowing the public to personally experience the nuances of mental health recovery stories, feel the resilience of life, and foster greater empathy.
We will host a seminar inviting partners who have long been engaged in community-guided tours and Human Library initiatives to discuss future directions for community work aimed at reducing stigma, inspiring each other, and pooling collective wisdom.
Highlights include:
Keynote Speech: Everyone is a Book: How the "Human Library" Leads Communities Out of Prejudice and Isolation
Speaker: Professor Chan Chi Tat (Associate Professor, Department of Social Work, Hong Kong Baptist University)
Innovative Sharing: Integration and Practice of Community Guided Tours and the "Human Library"
Speaker: Mr. Lam Kwok Mo (Team Leader, Lai Man Wai You Le Fang Social Workers)
Innovative Sharing: Using "Storytelling" to Revive Forgotten People and Stories in the Neighborhood
Speaker: 🚶🏼♂️➡️ Mr. Tam Kin Lok (Co-founder of "Neighborhood Guided Tours")
Panel Discussion: Innovative Practices and Future of Community Empowerment
Moderator: Ms. JW Wong Ho Yee
We welcome colleagues from the social welfare and academic sectors, as well as members of the public, to participate.
