On Tuesday (March 13), Ukraine reported that the Starshield (military version of Starlink) satellite network service provided by SpaceX (US.SPCX), which Ukrainian forces use on the battlefield, was suddenly speed-limited, making it difficult for Ukraine to intercept Russian attacks and deploy drones to strike Russia. Ukraine is demanding that the U.S. restore the Starshield service to normal.
Zelenskyy stated that the speed limitation on Starshield has already led to the deaths of Ukrainian civilians, citing a Russian drone attack on the western Ukrainian city of Lutsk near the Polish border, which resulted in 6 deaths and 13 injuries.
Zelenskyy said: "Unfortunately, we are losing a strong partner. Trump has chosen a side, but not ours, and that is painful. I am certain they know what they are doing."
SpaceX CEO Musk responded, stating that the Starshield system is owned and controlled by the U.S. government, and any speed or usage restrictions are decided by the U.S. military and ultimately by the President. He also noted that Starlink is a civilian internet service and cannot be used for military purposes. (rc)
