MeilingCircle.com (小緣圈)

In the past few years, I was fortunate enough to participate in numerous TV and radio shows, talks, seminars ,and I have also published a few books…Through these channels, I have received numerous letters and phone calls from viewers, callers and readers, telling me their experiences, their problems, their hearts’ desire and the kind of help they need…

I have been thinking how best I could help them. Before embarking on any plans and strategies, I decided to appoint a professional company to conduct a thorough market research to put everything in perspective.

Objectives:

  ● To map the singles market in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore

  ● To understand what the barriers are in finding partners

  ● What kind of matching services would address their needs and help them most ?

Survey specifications:

  ● Single males and females in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan, aged 20-49

  ● Online interviews, recruited from a professional online access panel

  ● Total sample size n=1,551 across region, and n=517 in Hong Kong

  ● Country results have a margin of error of +/- 4.4% at the 95% confidence level

Here are some interesting facts and figures in synopsis:

  1) The singles’ situation …

53% of singles in Hong Kong, versus 44% of singles in Taiwan, and only 40% of singles in Singapore claim that they are presently in a stable relationship. “Stable” meaning seeing someone exclusively for a minimum of six months or more.

  2) And nearly all of those who are not in a relationship are looking for someone…

Of those who are not already in a relationship, 92% in HK, 85% in Taiwan, and 82% in Singapore are looking for someone, whether openly or secretly, actively or passively, they truly wish to find a stable partner.

  3) “Quality” of a “stable relationship” is being questioned

Sad is that 42% of those who admit to be presently in a “stable” relationship in Hong Kong,   39% in Taiwan and 27% in Singapore are still secretly looking for someone else! They stay in this present relationship only because it is better than being alone, there is no urgency in parting their ways but they already know in their heart of hearts that this “stable partner” is not “the one”.

  4) The main barriers in finding partners

HK & Taiwan both voted “Heavy workload and no time” to be # 1 reasons, “All the good ones are taken” as # 2 reason, and “nobody wants me” as #3. Singapore voted #2 first, followed by #3, and then #1.

  5) About one in six singles use or have used dating services

Taiwan is most receptive to using matchmakers and online dating services, followed by Hong Kong with Singaporeans coming third. There is however a large population of singles, especially in the age group 35-50 who have never used such services before but claim to be “ seriously thinking about it”.

  6) Online Dating

Men use more online dating services than women in all three cities. Women are mostly afraid of  fraud issues. They admit they would choose to go online a lot more if only these concerns would be removed somehow.

The above is only a small sampling of a very exhaustive research. Based in part to all the facts and figures, I then began to construct a platform to address the market needs of today’s singles… and finally, MeilingCircle.com was born.
